Goal of the project “Building free of torture and impunity societies in Western Balkans” is to contribute to the society free of torture through activities of civil society that are directed against torture and other cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment or punishing, and to promote international standards, especially OPCAT. Also, goal of the project is to promote human dignity in prisons through eliminating torture and inhuman treatment of vulnerable individuals in prisons in Montenegro, Serbia and Albania.
Specific goal is to improve the access to appropriate legal means and expertise for the category of inmates under risk with the aim to achieve significant changes in practice of public authorities in prisons. Among other matters, the project envisages activities such as researching and documenting cases of torture and inhuman and degrading treatment or punishing; provision of free legal aid to convicted persons; organizing trainings for the prison staff and medical staff in prisons and for the students of the Law Faculty and Medical Faculty; strengthening of capacities of NGOs in this area through exchange of experience and through regional access.
Duration of the project is 30 months. Lead partner of the project is Youth Initiative for Human Rights I Montenegro (YIHR), while the partners are Rehabilitation Center for Trauma and Torture from Albania (ARCT); Youth Initiative for Human Rights from Serbia (YIHRSR) and International Rehabilitation Council for Torture Victims from Denmark (IRCT) with the support of the European Union.
